07/01/2012: AFC Phoenix  6 v  2 Bradwell Belles FC (Tesco County Cup)

A true quarter final game that had all the girls giving 100% (perhaps they misunderstood Daves team talk and believed he was going to buy them all a Blackberry if they win lol).  With only one training session since the Xmas festivities and no game since 3rd December this could have gone one of 2 ways and fortunately the passion and desire to progress showed from the off.  39 seconds into the game and Kyrie put the home team in front and then followed up 3 minutes later for her 2nd in the game.  Bradwell played some lovely football down the channels with the “give & gos” but the defensive unit held strong and kept them at bay.  10 minutes into the game and Katie scored with Bradwell coming back 3 minutes later  a bit of confusion on Phoenix trying to put the ball out of play for an injured player that was intercepted and passed across 6 yard box and tapped into net from a lone player as we had all stopped - perhaps play to the whistle and ignore injuries should be adhered to??  In reply Kyrie hit home her hatrick in the 26th minute with Elicia scoring in the dying seconds of the first half to go in 5-1 at the break.  The second half saw pretty much end to end chances with the Phoenix defensive duties keeping the goals out (even last ditch line clearances) - however a penalty was awarded in the last minute to Bradwell to make it 5-2 but not happy about proceedings Phoenix upped a level and Janelle bagged the final kick of the game being another goal to conclude 6-2 and progressing into the semi final against Leek.

03/12/2011: AFC Phoenix 2 - 3 Wyrley Panthers

This game started as it meant to go on as a very physical Wyrley came to do battle.  The first half commenced with an end to end exchange that resulted in Wyrley getting a corner from goalkeeper Janelle diving to stop a rocket shot that subsequently the corner ended somehow to go in the back of the net in the 15th minute (sorry blinked and missed how it happened - thats what happens when your a linesman!!!!). When the sideline supporters get as passionate and emotional as the players the Phoenix girls upped their game with Kyrie hitting the net in the 22nd minute followed 3 minutes later by Elicia with both of them narrowly missing a further 2 shots 1v1 with the goalkeeper that left it 2-1 that could have been 4-1 at half time.  The half time talks was different in both camps with Wyrley destined to make it feisty and more physical which resulted in 3 occasions where time was spent with hefty tackles for medical assistance (good job Sir Alex wasn’t on the sidelines this week else we would have had 5 minutes extra time let alone the substitutions that took place). Phoenix thought they may have had a chance when an hand ball occurred (thanks to honesty of Wyrley linesman) inside the penalty area - however the ball was placed on the line where the ball landed (not where offence took place and the is line still the penalty area?) and a direct free kick was given that gave Wyrley the break that they then matched what Phoenix did in the second half with goals in the 22nd & 25th minutes that even thought Phoenix battled to the end (35 minutes each way only) a 2-3 result was the conclusion for the day. Suppose with 2 wins and a draw to Phoenix in 2011 suppose we had better let them have one to make it more entertaining in 2012.  A true determined game by all Phoenix players on the pitch that again proved to be an entertaining great promotion for girls football game - unfortunately with entertainment doesn’t always get results (is that what Sir Alex said last year????) But lets see where we are in May with league, league cup to defend and county cup to unfold.

26/11/2011: AFC Phoenix 7 - 0  Brownhills Community Colts FC

Starting the game with 10 players Brownhills played a defensive game keeping the Phoenix at bay until Kyrie hit home in the 14th minute.  Two minutes later Elicia hit her first of yet another hatrick in a game.  Three minutes later katie joined in for the first of her goals with Janelle hitting home to in the 33rd minute to make it 4-0 at half time.  Just before half time, Brownhills took a blow with one of their players coming off worse in a 50/50 tackle ending in an early finish and trip to hospital (we all hope all is ok and she is back next week).  So down to 9 players Brownhills battled in again to be caught out by Elicia in the 40th and 62nd minute with katie finishing off the goals in the 67th minute however Brownhills continued to battle to the end with a few chances coming in at the Phoenix end during the 2nd half. Creative passing by the Phoenix with Ellen, Beccy and Chloe shining through in an out of standard formation.  Well done to all from both teams for entertaining game.

19/11/2011: Hednesford United Girls 4 - 6 AFC Phoenix (AFT - 2-2)

This game is one that many players and parents would want to watch over and over again with a fantastic display of football  from both sides.  In 2nd minute Phoenix started with Kyrie hitting the back of the net with Hednesford getting one back 5 minutes later. With end to end football Hednesford scored in the 26th minute to take it into half time 2-1.  After the break some fantastic play from both teams took place with Phoenix getting a goal in the 66th minute with a cross from Kyrie catching Katie to make it 2-2 after 70 minutes.  Cup game drama with extra time pursued with no further goals. Penalties took place with further goals from Ellie, Kyrie, Katie and Elicia to move onto the semis against Colron.  Outstanding play and commitment from both sides - well done to all girls.

12/11/2011: Hednesford United Girls 1 - 4 AFC Phoenix

What started off at a slow pace (lets not forget the girls were on the razz at curry night last night) allowing Hednesford in a brief bit of luck in the 13th minute score the opener much against the run of play to take the lead in to half time.  Second half saw the Phoenix wake up with Janelle scoring in the 1st minute just after coming on.  Whilst a lot of play was up in the Hednesford half Rachel, Caitlin & Aimee kept the back door shut for a lot of the half.  At 1-1 it could have finished with 1 point until 10 minutes from time Ellie opened her tally for the season then Kyrie put one in the 64th minute. With the game still pinned in Hednesford half Elicia positioned herself nicely on the edge of the 6 yard box to tap in the concluding goal right on 70 minutes.

05/11/2011: AFC Phoenix 4 - 1 Stoke Town Ladies (Tesco Cup)

What was a new encounter for the Phoenix playing a team from the North of the County, they demonstrated how to play the good football that they have learnt over the years. Kyrie opened the scoring in the 15th minute with Janelle 13 minutes later which would have been a nice result for half time, however Stoke came back and pinched a goal just before half time.  In the second half Katie added to her season by hitting the net in the 9th minute then concluding 10 minutes before time to bring the mighty Phoenix into the quarter finals of the Tesco County Cup.

15/10/2011: Brownhills Colts 1 - 8 AFC Phoenix

Whilst coming off the backend of a defeat the Phoenix went to show what the are really made of with Elicia knocking in her first goal in the 13th minute.  An immediate break from the Colts gave them their first goal of the season in the 14th minute.  Elicia then notched up more goalsa in the 29th, 33rd, 36th and 49th minute when Katie decided to join the action knocking her goal in the 51st with Elicia finishing off her stint for the day in the 54th minute making her tally 6 in the game.  Kyrie then came in 10 minutes from the end to add another to her season tally.  An improved Brownhills couldn’t contain the Phoenix goal scorers but a great entertaining game on all accounts.

08/10/2011:  AFC Phoenix 2 - 3 Lichfield Diamonds

What was always destined to be a close call with another top of the table battle Lichfield edged the lead in the first half on the 17th minute.  In true Phoenix fashion the girls stood their ground and Elicia scored in the 21st minute with Katie following up in the last few seconds of the half to take Phoenix into half time 2-1.  The second half came out as expected with both teams firing both barrels.  In the 9th minute of second half Diamonds pulled a goal back to bring level pegging.  The fast a furious backwards and forwards on the pitch continued with Lichfield pulling a goal in the dieing seconds of the game to take the 3 points.

24/09/2011: Wyrley Panthers 0 - 0 AFC Phoenix

With the Phoenix down to 11 players taking on 3 times league winners Panthers was going to be another top of the table battle for the girls.  Full credit to them for showing an entertaining true spirited football game from both parties What resembled more of a table tennis game with the ball backwards and forwards at a great pace of knots there wasn’t much more to say apart from what was witnessed was two teams showing how girls football should be played.  One could say lost 2 points although would be inclined to say rather have 1 point than 0.

17/09/2011: Wyrley Pumas 0 - 3 AFC Phoenix

With pre-season cobwebs put out to dry after getting the first game of season out of the way, Phoenix started as they mean to go on.  With Kristal kicking out of her hands in the 16th minute Elicia took control to bang it in the back of the net.  Elicia then followed on in the 22nd minute with a nice lay off from Kyrie to take us to half time 2-0 up.  Second half saw the third goal of the game come from a solo run by Katie in the 45th minute to go past 2 defenders then place in the back of the net.

10/09/2011: AFC Phoenix 3 - 0 Colron Girls FC

Phoenix kicked off the season against an improved Colron with attacking and defending principles being used by both parties.  The first goal of the season came in the 15th minute from a Janelle rocket shot to commence the Phoenix out of the traps.  The second half gave Kyriie her first goal of the season from a beautiful swerved ball into space from Elicia in the 60th minute. With 5 minutes to go a piercing through ball from Aimee gave Katie her start to the season.  Just what the doctor ordered for the first game of the season.
